DESCRIPTION:
CUTLASS SALON TOURS RIVERSIDE.
1.
You settle into the Salon's reclining bucket seat, and right off the line you hit the S curves. Your Salon's quick-ratio power steering helps find a good line through each turn.
2.
After Turn 6, a short stretch of straightaway has a number of dips in it. The Salon's "road-tuned" suspension responds along with the bite of the radial tires to provide a steady, controlled ride.
3.
Turns 7 and 7-A make up a tough "S" (If your Salon was equipped with the 5-speed stick and standard 260 V-8, this would be a good spot to see how smoothly it downshifts from 3rd to 2nd.)
4.
A long straightaway lets you check
the responsiveness of the Salon's available 350 V-8 engine. Very smooth, steady acceleration. Impressive.
5.
Turn 9 is a big 180 degrees. But the Salon's front and rear stabilizer bars help hold the car flatter all the way through the entire curve.
6.
As you cross the finish line you get a great feeling of exhilaration. It's that old romance of matching man and machine to the road.
We weren't driving Riverside as a demonstration of the Salon's speed. Rather we wanted to check out how the Salon responded to our input — how it performed on a professional race track.
Our analysis? Well, just like at Road America and other courses we’ve taken the Salon through, our general impression can be summed up in one word — superb. Salon is a superb road car.

CUTLASS SALON TOURS ROAD AMERICA
Cutlass Salon toured the famous Road America race course not as a demonstration of speed, but to see how the Salon responds to the demands of a tough competition track.
Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. Home of the famous Road America Handicap and June Sprints.
It proved to be a great location for checking out the response and handling abilities of the Oldsmobile Cutlass Salon. Steering, acceleration, braking — we wanted to see how it would react.
1.
You settle into the Salon’s reclining bucket seat. The straightaway in the main chute off the starting line gives you a chance to check the Salon’s grand touring suspension. The shocks and springs are tuned to the road and you find the ride firm and solid.
2.
At Corner 1, you brake for the turn, but accelerate through it. You can't help but be impressed with the responsiveness of the Salon’s power front disc brakes.
3.
Station 3 leads into the Moraine Sweep. Its a lot tougher than it looks because it slopes sharply downhill. Your Salon’s radial tires bite and help hold you in the turn.
4.
Corner 5 is the most difficult one on the course. It leads downhill into a 120 degree turn. But your Salon's front and rear end stabilizer bars help hold the car steady and flat all the way through. (If your Salon was equipped with the 5-speed manual transmission and standard Rocket 260 V8, this would be a good spot to discover how smoothly you could downshift from 3rd to 2nd).
5.
You're at the famous Carousel now, a 180 degree curve that leads into a blind turn at Corner 1.Your Salon’s quick-ratio steering is quite responsive and helps find the right line through the curve.
6.
This is the Canada Corner or Corner 12. As you're coming out, you accelerate. You've got the available Rocket 403 V-8, which proves to be a smooth and responsive performer. You can’t help but smile as you cross the finish line.
All in all, an enjoyable run. Its been said, responsiveness is basic to a great car. "Great" hardly begins to describe the Olds Cutlass Salon.
