Description
Viana Porcelain Chess Set (Viana is an old name of Portuguese Ceramics)The Chess set offered was purchased new in 1982 in Coimbra, Portugal and is formed according to traditional Viana designs
Each piece is painted by hand and signed, often with the name of the painter
Except for several prongs missing on the crowns of the king and queen pieces, the set is in pristine condition
The king and bishop pieces are 4 inches (approximately 10 cm), tall
The knights are 3 1/4 inches (approximately 8 cm), tall
The pawns are 2 3/8 inches (approximately 3 1/2 cm), tall
The blue and white ceramic tile chess board is 19 3/4 inches (approximately 50 cm) square with a solid wooden frame, *(there are scratches on the board's wooden frame)
The factory in Northern Portugal that produced this set closed for good in 2010
It is almost impossible to find a similar set anywhere outside Portugal and likely very difficult in Portugal as well
